Two types of cockroaches can be found here in Essex: the German Cockroach, otherwise known as Blattella Germanica, and the Oriental Cockroach, otherwise known as Blatta Orientalis. Both cockroaches live in the UK but they are both noticeably different in their appearance and mannerisms and require different removal treatments.

The German Cockroach

The German Cockroach can be found across Europe and other warm-temperature climates. The German Cockroach prefers warm and humid conditions but can survive in cold temperatures, too. The German Cockroach will feed on anything of a high calorie content but needs a regular water supply. These creatures are mostly nocturnal and live in dark, narrow places in big clusters.

The German Cockroach is commonly found in domestic and restaurant kitchens, bakeries and laundries. They can multiply in hot environments, such as in heating systems in big buildings. They can also carry diseases that are harmful to us, including Salmonella and Ecoli, which is why it is so important to eradicate them. The German Cockroach can be treated using a Fipronil Gel and a combination of liquid pesticide spray and dust, which should control and eradicate the pests effectively.

The Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental Cockroach, which we are more prone to seeing, are the more stubborn ones. They infest in similar areas but particularly favour older properties. They can cope better in colder weather and are usually found in drains and waste food or dustbin areas.

They can of course be treated, but they are much more difficult to get rid of. The treatment is much stronger because their egg cases are highly resistant. A combination of pesticides and gels are used to combat them. Repeat treatments will be needed to eradicate the infestations.

How do I know if I have a cockroach infestation?

The biggest giveaway of a cockroach infestation is finding small spindle shaped droppings with a bad smell, and finding dead cockroach bodies. Their faeces can cause allergic reactions, especially to sensitive people.
